As a certified veterinary technician, I am required to be familiar with many dog breeds. As a professional writer on veterinary subjects, I am always on the lookout for good reference books. I am quite familiar with many of the breed guides on the market. I picked this one up on a sale rack, just because it had lots of great photos and because I had never seen it before.
What a fabulous addition to my library!! This guide contains all the usual breeds plus more rare breeds in one book than any other out there. I thought there were few books that could stump me on rare breeds, but Bruce Fogle has done it here! I had never heard of perhaps 5-10% of the breeds in this book. I can say with confidence that this guide covers several that no other guide out there even includes Although there is only a page or two on each breed, the information given is good, solid info. The photographs in this book are just wonderful- all color and great quality, showing what each breed really looks like.
Plus, there are substantial sections on training, health and choosing a dog that are well-researched. Good information to have, plus some fun extras. Even though it is essentially a reference book, members of my family had a ball looking up the different breeds and looking at their pictures.
The breeds are all arranged by size - from a "small" section to "extra-large", with a full index, making it easy to look up any breed.
The book is relatively inexpensive, considering all the information it offers. For vets, vet techs, groomers, trainers, or people who just love dogs, this reference book is a must-have.
I got this book because it was on sale and it had a lot of cool rare dog breeds in it. I love rare breeds, I own one actually. The colored photos are really good (some are just head shots) and the descriptions of them, while short, are still to the point. But I do have to point something out and that's why this book only got three stars.
I've read some of the breed descriptions (not all of them yet mind you) and the author states that some breeds (that helped with the evolution of the ones you're reading) are extinct. This is wrong; there are many breeds that I know for a fact that are still here on this Earth with us. While they may be very rare or on the verge of extinction, they are still our companions and working the flocks, etc.
Also I've noticed some other tidbits about the dogs itself are off a bit. So just be aware that when you get this book, not all the information is sound. Other than that enjoy; I have two better dog breeds books than this one. But this one is just a quick reference guide that will help if I need to bring it out.
